I made the mistake of googling “2018 Home Décor Trends.” One website says accent walls are out this year while two others say they are in. This year’s new metal? Copper. Or brass. The internet hasn’t made up its mind yet. But we do know that boring old plain stainless-steel sinks are so 2017. Your grandmother will be happy to know that floral prints are back with a vengeance. No word on whether the sticky transparent plastic furniture covers are back as well. Also, in this year is storage. Not sure why, how or when storage went out of vogue. Must have been during the minimalist phase of home décor that I missed. Thank goodness home décor maven and reality show home fixer upper Joanna Gaines has given us all permission to like black and white again. 2018’s design trigger words are “texture” and “rich.” I hope that doesn’t mean popcorn ceilings are coming back.
According to Liz Walters of HGTV’s House Hunters Renovations, all white kitchens are a thing of the past and you should expect to see darker textures, grey stainless-steel appliances and funky retro colors. Speaking of texture, Walters also wants you to keep your eyes open for leathered granite counter tops.
My favorite “in” trend of 2018? Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. Nothing could suit my life or my home “décor” more than imperfection.
At the end of the day, whether you are buying or selling a home, there is very little chance all the design elements you really want will be present or that your lovingly decorated house will be up to snuff for the next owner. We all have our own unique visions and we should decorate our houses to fit ourselves and not because some Kardashian on Snapchat said farmhouse sinks are gross.
